The number 1 struggle with nutrition that most everyone faces is…
I can’t control myself. I crave carbs and sugar!
Given the latest diet fads (Paleo, Ketogenic and Low-Carb), this is not surprising. Many of us are struggling with trying to avoid carbohydrates and sugar, feeling guilty every time we have a piece of fruit and then attempting to control the cravings that these types of restrictions lead to.
Here’s another interesting thing about the #1 nutrition struggle. The Number 2 (Shopping, timing, planning) and Number 1 (carbs/sugar/cravings) struggles with nutrition are very closely related and the difference between #1 and #2 was a fraction of a percentage point.
This blog series theme is “Your Nutrition Struggles…Conquered.” So, how do you conquer, “I eat too many carbs,” “I struggle with sugar and cravings?”
The answer is give your body what it needs. When you are eating enough calories and getting a wide variety of nutrients in your food, the cravings you have for sugar and carbs will literally disappear. You won’t have to fight them, you won’t need willpower and you won’t have to eliminate them entirely from your diet. You won’t feel guilty about eating them and you won’t have a need to overindulge.
The human body is geared for “homeostasis.” That simply means your body wants to be in balance. It wants to be healthy.
I know, I can hear you now, “Not my body. My body wants chocolate, pizza and donuts.” And right now, you’re probably right.
If you’re stuck in a cycle of cravings, eating lots of sugar and processed foods, then your body doesn’t know anything else exists. Your body is starving…it needs nutrients like vitamins, minerals, fiber, protein, carbs and fats to perform its daily functions.
When you don’t give your body what it really wants (nutrients, not just calories), it will trigger cravings…for anything it knows you will eat in the hopes that somewhere in the junk is some tiny nugget of real nutrition. And this cycle gets ugly. Studies show that sugar is more addictive than cocaine. Once you have it you want more of it and there often seems to be no end to how much of it you can eat.
Sounds scary and awful doesn’t it? Sounds like you have no control? Feels like you have no control? Feels like everything you do is “wrong” when it comes to nutrition? You might be right…for right now.
